Competitive sports has a history that is practically as old as human civilisation. Born from humanity being faced with the great unknown, brought on by physical nature, it became a means for one to reflect on their own existence and cognition of function, proving their physical capabilities and striving to explore and further push one’s limits. To some extent, the competitive spirit it represents catalysed modern society – between people, between enterprises, between cities and between countries – becoming a catalyst for progress and positive growth, but it has also brought on some disadvantages.

A work of art

The Shed is a non-profit cultural organisation that commissions, develops and presents original works of art across all disciplines for all audiences. Its building – an innovative 200,000ft2 (18,500m²) structure designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro as lead architect, and Rockwell Group as collaborating architect – can physically transform to support artists’ most ambitious ideas.

Originating from an architectural competition, the Drummondville Library in Drummondville, Canada, transposes the historical, cultural and poetic essence of the region into a studied urban and architectural composition.

Any Beatles fan will know the Uline Arena as the venue for the band’s first US appearance in 1964. Built in 1941, it also hosted ice hockey, basketball and tennis matches along with events as diverse as rodeos and motor racing.
