As we approach the close of 2024, this issue offers a forward-looking perspective on some of the key challenges and opportunities shaping the built environment. At the heart of this edition lies a shared commitment to innovation, sustainability and resilience – a theme exemplified by the ongoing transition to the Future Homes Standard.
With the 2025 deadline fast approaching, the standard sets ambitious goals for reducing operational carbon emissions, redefining the way we design, construct and insulate our homes. Features such as Knauf’s insights on energy efficiency on page 26 highlight the transformative potential of adopting a fabric-first approach.
Beyond housing, we also explore broader sustainability topics, such as the role of lime plasters in flood resilience, on page 24, and the importance of acoustic harmony in retrofitted office spaces on page 32. Across all these features, one message resonates: Our industry’s ability to adapt and innovate will be critical to meeting both regulatory demands and the expectations of future generations.
On behalf of the entire team at FC&A, I’d like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We look forward to continuing the conversation in 2025 as we tackle the challenges and embrace the opportunities ahead.
